Who are the creators of Chocolate Ancestor?
Two sisters Latoya Long and Shametrius Long.
Where did you get the idea for for starting Chocolate Ancestor?
Well, I've always had an entrepreneurial spirit and I've always been known for being outspoken, so sometimes some things I say people would tell me "that would be good on a shirt," but I never relished on that idea, until recently; I have a friend who has a online store as well and he would ask me for ideas. Some of my ideas didn't quite match with his niche, but of course, I began to think "hmmm, if I can come up with ideas for him, surely I could come up with my own thing," but again, I left it as a thought. Since I am a believer in signs, I saw the shopify advertisements a few times and I finally thought, "maybe I should look into this shopify thing, I keep seeing it on facebook and google".
My sister and I were conversing one day and she mentioned the idea of starting an online store. She told me if I wanted to be a part of it, then I was more than welcome too. I thought it was a great idea and believed in her vision and told her that I will do whatever I can to assist her in this new business venture.
What's story behind your products & how did you get started?
Although I began to look into shopify, I still didn't have an idea of what I would sell, until my sister and I participated in the NAACP March for Justice in Downtown Atlanta, July 8, 2016 after the Alton Sterling & Philando Castile shootings. We were creating our signs and I began to come up with so many different sayings and things I wanted to express, but I was limited to just the front and back. So I wrote my other ideas down and finally decided that I would create products with positive messages. Although I used social media to express how I was feeling, I knew that by creating products with these messages then maybe, just maybe, we can help change certain outlooks and encourage self love, love for one another, love for the black dollar and black owned businesses.
Where do you look for creative inspiration?
Honestly, I look everywhere. My mind is ALWAYS on 1000 lol...no seriously. I relate it to the way they said Prince would act once he got inspired; he could be in the middle of hosting his own party and get inspired and at that very moment, stop what he's doing and leave to go lay it down on a track. I am similar to that, it could be a regular conversation that I'm having and one word could trigger an idea and I have to act on it immediately, or else I will forget.
What's your background?
I am 27, I graduated from Valdosta State University with a BBA in Economics and a minor in African American Studies. Currently, I work for a Bank full time as a Mortgage Post Closer, I am also a Real Estate Investor.
I am 25, I graduated from Georgia Southern University with a BA in History and a minor in Africana Studies. Currently, I work as a Shelter Advocate at a Domestic Violence Shelter.
What's your vision for Chocolate Ancestor?
Originally, I just wanted it to be an online store, but being the big dreamer and business minded individual that I am, I would like for us to participate in expos, pop-up shops, and who knows, maybe one day have a store front location. But the main goal is to help inspire and promote love and knowledge of self.
I hope to uplift and promote positivity, self-love, and prosperity to as many people as we can. It's amazing how a single quote or saying on a shirt can inspire the person reading it and because of this, we now have an opportunity to reach a multitude of people. I envision us in a store front location with a plethora of customers in the near future.
